Four-part representation of human skin, 70-times enlarged, designed to be disassembled. It showcases the different layers of the skin, including the epidermis and dermis, with removable layers for closer examination. The model depicts the initial stages of hair growth (both exposed and in cross-section), a sweat gland, and sensory organs within the skin. It is mounted on a base for display.

Hair:

  • Hair development starts with the formation of a dermal papilla, followed by an epidermal placode.
  • The placode interacts with the dermal papilla, stimulating cell proliferation and the formation of a hair bulb.
  • Hair follicles are sheaths of skin and connective tissue that surround the hair root.
  • The hair shaft is the visible part, while the hair root is embedded in the skin.
  • Sensory nerves are associated with hair follicles, allowing for the detection of hair movement.

Sweat Glands:

  • Both eccrine and apocrine sweat glands develop from the epidermis.
  • Eccrine glands, responsible for thermoregulation, develop as epithelial buds that grow into the mesenchyme.
  • Apocrine glands, which are associated with puberty and release a protein-rich sweat, develop similarly but their ducts open into hair follicles.

Sensory Organs:

  • The skin contains various sensory receptors, including nerve endings that respond to touch, temperature, and pain.
  • Specialized nerve endings are associated with hair follicles, allowing for the detection of even slight air movement.
  • Merkel cells, located in the basal epidermis, are also involved in sensory perception.

Overall Skin Development:

  • The dermis, located beneath the epidermis, provides structural support and contains hair follicles, sweat glands, and sensory nerves.
  • The subcutaneous tissue, the deepest layer, is made of fat and connective tissue.
  • The epidermis, the outermost layer, acts as a waterproof barrier and contributes to skin tone
