Modern Painting chronicles such English artists as J.M.W. Turner, who had himself lashed to the mast of a ship in a storm to see how the scene looked before painting it. Also included are such American artists as Charles Willson Peale, whose full-size picture of two of his sons was lifelike that George Washington is said to have nodded in greeting as he passed. A seperate chapter introduces Manet, the great Impressionists, and their contemporaries. Another treats Cezanne, Gauguin, and the tormented Van Gogh.
