Money in South Africa - C.L.Engelbrecht
This gem of a book was released in 1987 and was compiled by Mr C.L.Engelbrecht who had been a manager at Volkskas Bank until his retirement in 1984.
The former doyen of South African Numismatics, Dr Frank Mitchell assisted in its compilation.
It is the most comprehensive book ever written on the Numismatic Development of South Africa and covers money as first used by Man before going into the South African history starting with coinage of the Dutch East India Company and ending with the coinage of the Republic.
It is methodical and systematic in covering each era as it occured in History and includes the Batavian Republic,Griqua coinage, English rule,Coinage Patterns of Lauer,Burgersponden, Kruger coinage,The story of the Veldpond, Union Mint issues and ending with the Republic coinage.
In addition it traces the evolution of Bank Notes starting with Rixdollars and the Good Fors. Tokens are also mentioned.
Such a book will never be able to be written again mainly because most of the raw coins have been graded by NGC/PCGS and are only to be found in highest value collections.
A book packed with factual detail (sometimes in small print) and colour photographs that are also very instructive about the History of South Africa as reflected in its coinage.
Long out of print, seldom seen for sale and truly the Bible of serious collectors.
Ideal for the new collector to give him an overview and direction to this absorbing hobby.
Hard covered and in Mint condition. 135 Pages, coffee table size.
