Moringa is widely valued as a nutrient-rich food plant. The leaves contain protein, vitamins, minerals and plant compounds including carotenoids, flavonoids and other antioxidants.
Research has investigated Moringa for potential antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and metabolic health effects. Some human studies have reported promising results, but the clinical evidence remains limited and Moringa should not be presented as a treatment or cure for disease.
Moringa seeds also contain substantial amounts of oil and protein. The leaves and immature pods are the parts most commonly used as foods.
Important: Health information is for general educational purposes and is not medical advice.
Sowing: Sow during warm weather, ideally in spring or early summer.
Seed preparation: Soaking is optional. Seeds can be sown directly into a well-draining growing medium.
Planting depth: Sow approximately 12 cm deep.
Temperature: Moringa prefers warm conditions. Protect young plants from cold temperatures and frost.
Watering: Keep the soil lightly moist during germination, but never waterlogged. Once established, Moringa is relatively drought tolerant.
Position: Plant in full sun for strong, healthy growth.
Soil: Use fertile, free-draining soil. Moringa does not perform well in persistently wet soil.
Transplanting: If started in containers, transplant carefully once the young plant is established. Avoid unnecessary disturbance to the developing roots.
Spacing: Allow plenty of room if growing Moringa as a full-sized tree. For regular leaf harvesting, plants can be maintained considerably smaller through pruning.
Pruning: Regular pruning encourages branching and makes harvesting the leaves easier.
Cold protection: Moringa is a tropical/subtropical tree and is sensitive to frost. In colder South African areas, grow it in a protected position or large container that can be sheltered during cold weather.
