The contents of the book ;Cellotape securing the cover to the first page . Inscribed with the signature of the author and date 1991. In addition in a different handwriting a name and street name of a previous owner . Binding is good and no browning of the paper .
Privately published on the insistence of Reg O. Pearse ( Barrier of Spears: Drama of the Drakensberg), the author was well known in Natal having served in both World Wars. He was one the leading climbers in the Drakensberg during the 1930s through to the 1950s. He was the first person to use pitons (in the Berg), and was of the group that first camped on the summit plateau in winter (July 1936). He made first ascents of Cleft Peak Frontal (July 1946) and the Outer Horn (July 1936). He saw wartime service in German East Africa in WW1 and was in the N.M.R. (intelligence section) in Abyssinia and the Western Desert. With peacetime, the author ran the last Post Cart service, recruited labourers for the mines and was a cattle rancher. All covered in this autobiography. The Godbold Award is awarded by The Mountain Club of South Africa (KZN section) for excellence in Climbing and Mountaineering .
