the sub dials work. The dial on the right is a 24 hour hand, the two other dials are a 30 minute timer. The bottom dial is seconds, the top left dial is minutes. They work by pressing the start/stop button on the top right of the watch face and the bottom right button resets the timer. I would highly recommend buying this watch. I am known for beating mine up and not taking great care of them. This Caravelle New York is still ticking (accurately) and I've taken it skiing, playing tennis and other physical endeavors.
