Covering his childhood, education, early military zeal and unashamed admission of using his mother's influence to achieve his military enlistment goals, to attaching himself to the Spanish military, fighting Cuban guerillas in Cuba ("The colonel and the mess generally looked with favour upon a plan to seek experience at a seat of war. It was considered as good or almost as good as a season's serious hunting, without which no subaltern or captain was considered to be living a respectable life."), to duty in Asia with the Malakand Field Force, the Tirah Expedition, taking part in the charge of the 21st Lancers at the Battle of Omdurman, and his exploits in the Boer War, and finally, becoming a member of parliament.
