Ben Johannis Viljoen was a Boer fighter during the Second Boer War, rising to Assistant Commandant-General before being captured in early 1902 and sent as a prisoner to St. Helena. Aside from the initial invasion of Natal, he fought primarily in the area east of Pretoria. As a result, his experience was largely with larger, coordinated units - although the sizes diminished from thousands to scores by his capture. As a result, his experiences are somewhat different than those of Boers that fought in small detachments in remoter areas.
