First published in 1928 by Methuen & Co. Ltd, hardcover, no jacket. The boards are worn and faded, and particularly rubbed on the reverse, having none of the lined texture present on the front board. Netting is visible along the seam of the front inside paste downs, which feature a map of West Africa. It seems that long-dried water or mildew has affected the rear board, and several last pages, as there are black marks on these last twenty or so pages, which are also starting to separate from the binding. Netting is also visible inside the rear boards, that display a map of the author's journey across Africa. Following the unseating of the author from the House of Commons in 1924, he embarked on a 7 month tour of Nigeria, the Gold Coast, and Sierra Leone, which is covered in the first part of the book. The second part then deals with his drive in British-made cars (Jowetts) from Lagos to Khartoum, in order to demonstrate or not their suitability for African conditions. Illustrated with several photographs.
