DAYAK PEOPLE OF BORNEO: Dayak is a generic term used to categorize a quite large group of indigenous peoples of the island of Borneo. The Ibans or Sea Dayaks are an Austronesian ethnic group indigenous to northwestern Borneo. The Ibans are also known as Sea Dayaks and the title Dayak was given by the British and the Dutch to various ethnic groups in Borneo island. Their languages all belong to the Indonesian branch of the Austronesian (Malayo-Polynesian) language family. In the past, the Dayaks were feared for their ancient tradition of headhunting practices (the ritual is also known as Ngayau by the Dayaks). The Dayak were animists whose complex religious practices involved numerous local spirits and omen animals. Since the mid-20th century, however, Dayak peoples have steadily adopted Anglicanism, Roman Catholicism, and Protestantism.
