As this is a mystery auction, the full description of the gem is not contained in this ad but rest assured that the mystery gem is a gorgeous, good quality mystic topaz and weighs a substantial 3.415 carats!
Mystic topaz gems are created by coating the pavillion of natural topaz specimens with a thin layer of titanium oxide by physical vapour deposition. The end result is a beautiful gem which displays iridescent colours. Due to the coating, mystic topaz must be handled with care, similar to opals and pearls. However, as only the pavillion is coated, the gem's table remains untreated and the gem can sustain general, careful day-to-day use without being damaged. Topaz is after all a fairly hard gem (8).
