Nathaniel Mokgosi was born in 1946 in Newclare, near Sophiatown, Johannesburg. In 1965, at the age of 19, Nat Mokgosi, having completed his schooling, became a member of the Ricky and the Diamonds pop group. The following year he began his studies at the Jubilee Art Centre in Johannesburg. He taught at The Open School and in 1970 became a full time artist living in Soweto.
Nat Mokgosi was a graphic artist who produced etchings and linocuts of figures and animals with religious themes. His religious subjects, particularly those reflecting suffering and redemption, acted as powerful metaphors for expressions of frustration, resistance and hope in the face of the incipient cruelty that lay at the heart of South Africa’s unjust apartheid policies. The ambiguity inherent in some of the animal-inspired imagery in Makgosi’s work is often inspired by the chance and ambivalent appearances of objects in everyday life.
He has participated in group and solo exhibitions in South Africa, the USA, Canada, Australia and West Germany. His work is found in various collections: Johannesburg Art Gallery, Iziko South African National Gallery, Cape Town,
De Beers Centenary Art Gallery, University of Fort Hare and University of KwaZulu-Natal.
