History and legend:
It was only in 1797 that Dioptase was recognised as a copper mineral & thus distinguished from Emerald. Because of it's green colour it was called "copper emerald" for a long time. The name is derived from the Greek diopteia meaning "transparent". As a highly sought-after gemstone, it was considered the guardian of prosperity and beauty. Dioptase symbolises wealth & abundance.
This stunning crystal is a copper silicate found in veins of copper oxidised with air or water. Dioptase is relatively soft for a gemstone but it has great "fire", that is, it has a remarkable dispersal of light rays and play of colours, so that transparent stones are highly regarded - and RARE!
Application and care:
Dioptase should not be cleansed in water but should be placed once a month among dry tumbled hematite stones. When not in use, Dioptase is best stored with pink kunzite and rock crystal.
