Today, I’m pleased to offer a natural marble fireplace, complete with an ornately carved, solid wood, mahogany-finish surround. The Bid or Buy 50k limit on photograph size does not do this three-piece collection justice – please email me for additional pictures of the carving detail, and marble pattern. Please note that the marble backing slab cannot be seen in the listing picture, but is intact and available.
The lot you are bidding on is comprised of three separate pieces; the wooden surround, the marble backing and the marble hearth.
In more detail;
The mahogany-finish surround, a carved and scalloped reproduction of a classic piece, has been fashioned from solid wood. It stands on carved, fluted columns with plain drum bases, and wonderfully detailed capitals. The focal point of the piece is a central, scalloped carving. The outer dimensions of the surround are; it stands 110cm tall, being 121cm wide, and is 20cm deep at the deepest point of the mantel shelf. The aperture or firebox dimensions are; it is 89cm high at the centre, and 83cm wide.
The marble backing slab is 96cm x 96cm square, with a central, circular flume hole roughly 18cm in diameter, and a piping cut-out 18cm wide and 6.5cm deep.
The marble hearth is 122cm wide, 38cm deep and stands 5cm high.
Marble used in fabrication is 20mm thick throughout, and is a deep, creamy mushroom beige with both darker and lighter inclusions.
This lot is in generally excellent condition, but I note here two flaws for the sake of accuracy and transparency. There is a chip on the wooden surround at the base of the left hand column. A piece of marble on the hearth riser has broken away – this piece is available and can be re-affixed.
Please note this lot does not include the props utilized for the photograph i.e. the brass-clad coal bin, mahogany easel, silver-plated candelabra or vintage decanter lighters. The first of these has already been listed on BoB, the balance may be listed separately at a later stage.
The dimensions and weights of these pieces make normal postage impractical. If the buyer lives within reasonable driving distance from Durban, I will be happy to deliver for a nominal fee, but will need assistance in off-loading the backing slab. If the buyer lives beyond these limits, they will have to make their own arrangements for collection. I will assist by packing/wrapping the items, and being available for the collection thereof.
