Need for Speed: Rivals (PS3) Review

Released in 2013 as a cross-gen launch title, Need for Speed: Rivals attempted to blend the high-speed chases of Hot Pursuit with the open-world exploration of Most Wanted. Developed by Ghost Games and Criterion, it throws players into the dual roles of outlaw racers and high-tech cops in the fictional, storm-swept world of Redview County. On PS3, however, the experience is noticeably pared backboth visually and technically.

Gameplay & Mechanics

FeatureDescriptionVerdict
Dual Campaign StructureChoose between Racer or Cop careers, each with their own progression paths, vehicles, and missions.Adds replayability and contrast, but narratives are weak and interchangeable.
Pursuit TechEMPs, spike strips, shockwaves, and turbo boosts used during chases by both factions.Fun tools that spice up races, especially in PvP or tough AI battles.
AllDrive (Online Integration)Drop-in multiplayer merges single-player and online racers into one world. Not available in full on PS3limited to single-player or standard online races.
Speedlists & AssignmentsComplete task-based objectives (e.g. evade chases, win sprints) to progress storylines.Keeps gameplay varied, though objectives often repeat across both factions.

Handling leans more arcade than sim, with exaggerated drifts and nitro boosts. Police chasesespecially as a racerare exhilarating early on, but eventually become overwhelming due to aggressive AI and rubber-banding.

World & Progression

Redview County is a seamless open world with dynamic weather, coastal highways, forests, and canyons. Its a beautiful design on paperbut:

  • PS3 limitations reduce the worlds draw distance and weather effects.

  • No fast travel, meaning long drives back to hideouts or command posts after each mission (especially brutal if you crash and lose all banked points).

  • Progression revolves around earning Speed Points to unlock vehicles and tech, but earning is risky: crash mid-session, and you lose unbanked points entirely.

This risk-reward system can be thrilling but also frustrating without mid-race saves or checkpoints.

Graphics & Performance (PS3-Specific)

  • Visuals: Noticeably downgraded from PS4/Xbox One versionstextures are flatter, lighting is basic, and weather is less dynamic.

  • Frame Rate: Targeted at 30 fps, but often dips during heavy pursuits or rainstorms.

  • Load Times: Long initial loads and resets after wrecks break immersion.

  • Crashes & Bugs: Occasional freezes and asset pop-in, especially when multiple pursuits overlap.

The PS3 version lacks polish compared to its next-gen counterparts, and its clear the game was built with more powerful hardware in mind.

Sound & Presentation

  • Sound Design: Engine roars and tire screeches sound fantastic. The dynamic music ramps up tension during pursuits.

  • Voiceovers: Sparse, poetic cop-vs-outlaw monologues narrate between events. Stylish, but try-hard and quickly skippable.

  • UI: Slick, minimalist menusthough some lack clarity when managing Pursuit Tech and upgrades.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Two full career paths with varied vehicles and gear

  • Exciting high-speed chases, especially as a racer

  • Pursuit Tech adds tactical options to classic arcade driving

  • Beautiful world design (conceptually), with diverse terrain and road types

Cons
Stripped-down PS3 visuals and frequent performance drops
Long drives between objectives and risk of losing progress on crash
Weak story delivery and repetitive objectives
Limited AllDrive support on PS3; less seamless than intended

Final Verdict

Need for Speed: Rivals on PS3 captures the adrenaline rush of high-stakes street racing and evasive police chasesbut its ambition is throttled by dated hardware. Without full online integration or next-gen polish, this version feels like a shadow of its potential. It's still fun in short bursts, but it lacks the staying power of the series' best.

Score: 6.7 / 10 Worth playing for hardcore NFS fans, but the PS3 version is undeniably the weakest way to experience Redview County. Consider a next-gen version if you want the full throttle.
