The author undertook a journey mainly to Hampton and Tuskegee areas in Alabama to acquaint himself with the actual conditions in schools and report upon the work and community value of these schools for coloured people in the Southern States of the USA. Pencilled inscription on Title page: "Personal copy with the signature of Dr Edgar Maurice who was the principal of the Harold Cressy School in Cape Town and active opponent of apartheid. Dr Maurice was banned by the Nationalist Government in the 1960s and harrassed by the Security Police. In 1968 he and his family lost their home in Plumstead to the Group Areas Act." Scattered pencil underlining and marks throughout. Light scattered foxing. Some creasing to the LH lower corner page edges. Age-toning to page edges. 160 Pages. Contents still firmly bound. Good. Softcover. Fragile. Thin card-wraps with edge-wear, sunning, creasing and marks. Lacks lower 3cm of spine edge. Minor repairs to spine.
