Met speelse erns sny hy in agter die fasade van alledaagse menswees en openbaar hy iets van die soetheid maar ook die ver-raderlikheid van leef. Ander kere is daar 'n donker toon van versteekte pyn, van verswygde tragedie: Die boer Willem wat gereeld jagveld toe ry om to gaan dood, terwyl die ding van sy vrou by die huis soos 'n hellevuur in hom brand Die effektiewe maar onaansienlike juffrou Gous wat na werksure Blossom word Oumatjie Hendrien wat vir die rol-prentmense moet "doodgaan" en verraai voel Storie na storie word die leser verras en ontroer, kry hy nuwe insig in die broosheid van menslike illusies en die eindigheid van ewige liefde.
