The Nelson Mandela 90th Birthday Celebration Set honours former South African President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, who celebrated his 90th birthday on the 18th of July 2008.
Each proof quality R5 circulation coin has been individually struck to the highest quality.
A R5 circulation coin was issued on the 18th of July 2008 to commemorate this event. The coin features the much loved Nelson Mandela on the reverse of the coin wearing his iconic “Madiba” shirt. This is the first time ever that a former President has featured twice on the same denomination and in the same circulation coin series. Nelson Mandela was first depicted on the obverse of the R5 circulation coin issued in 2000, a year after he left office.
The medallion is a combination of sterling silver and 24 carat gold (½ oz).
The bi-metal proof quality medallion depicts Nelson Mandela as a young man wearing traditional royal attire. The ½ oz, 24 carat gold inner features the words “90th Birthday” together with the portrait of Nelson Mandela on the reverse side. The South African coat of arms is depicted on the obverse side of the gold inner. The outer ring is made from sterling silver with the word “Madiba” and the words “Father of a Nation” appearing on the reverse side. Nelson Mandela’s 90th birth date “18 July 2008” and his full name “Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela” are shown on the obverse side of the outer ring.
The overall combination of the two designs aims to feature an official historical glimpse of Nelson Mandela’s life.
The coin and medallion are presented in a wooden box featuring an engraved image of Mandela on the lid. A numbered certificate of authenticity issued by the SA Mint certifies the product
