Neolithic Stone-age Implements Circa 4000 to Circa 2500 BC

The Neolithic Age can best be described as a period in which Hunter-Gatherers became more settled and in which farming evolved, in both Britain and Europe.
In Britain, this period of early farming corresponded to the arrival of immigrants from Europe, bringing with them rudimentary skills in farming as well as varieties of grain (wheat and barley) and goats and sheep. The animals, together with the local cattle and pigs, needed open areas for pasture and led to the clearing of woodland areas, all done with the axe. The axe-head was crafted from stone or flint (if it was available) and attached to a wooden handle. Flint arrowheads shows that hunting was still practiced, and, bone analysis of  the Neolithic inhabitants, shows that their diet was still predominantly of animal origin. Areas of rich soils, such as Northern Scotland, East Anglia, the North Yorkshire moors and Dartmoor, show evidence of this farming culture.
The making of clay pots, fashioned from coils of clay, also show their appearance at this time as well as some substantial monuments (long barrows) constructed of stone and wood and often covered with soil, are found.
The above articles were uncovered in the North of Scotland and include a typical stone axe-head and four, very finely executed arrowheads from flint.  The design of the arrowheads is known as the Neolithic Hollow Base arrowhead. Being very small, ranging from just 2 cm to 3 cm in length, these were possibly used for hunting bird life or rabbits.  The axe-head itself is only 4 cm in length and 3 cm wide.
These implements will make a superb collection for anyone even remotely interested in early history.
