We all recognize the Matryoshka as Russia's most favorite folk art souvenir, but their original purpose was as a toy for children and a very useful one indeed. It teaches small children important physical development skills - assembling and pulling the dolls apart, and comparing colors, height, width and volume. With the help of Matryoshka you can teach children to compare the items on the height, width and size.

This Russian Autumn Matryoshka is a hand made doll from Sergiev Posad (the traditional doll-making centre since the early 1890’s), consists of seven items and is decorated in traditional autumn yellow, golden and purple colors.
 
The dolls are decorated using pyrography technique, also known as pokerwork or wood burning, and then hand painted. The dolls are all hollow except the smallest one, and can hide one inside another.
