NEVER SEEN ON BOB! Royal Delft Blue 1952 KLM House No 1 - NOTE No 3 and No 6 Also on Auction
THIS IS A ROYAL DELFT DUTCH KLM AIRWAYS BOLS GIN HOUSE NO 1. I HAVE NEVER SEEN A NO1 SOLD ON BOB BEFORE. THE DELFT BLUE MINIATURES ARE MODELED AFTER NATIONAL MONUMENTS FROM ACROSS THE NETHERLANDS. THESE KLM HOUSES HAVE A FASCINATING HISTORY AND ARE FILLED WITH STORIES THAT CONNECT PEOPLE ACROSS THE GLOBE. THEY ARE INDEED SOME OF THE MOST INTERESTING LITTLE HOMES ON THE PLANET. THE KLM HOUSES ARE PRESENTS TO TRAVELERS ABOARD KLM (KONINKLIKE LUCHVAART MAATCHAPPIJ OR DUTCH ROYAL AVIATION COMPANY THE WORLDS OLDEST AIRLINE) FLIGHTS IN BUSINESS AND ROYAL CLASS ON INTERCONTINENTAL FLIGHTS.. WHAT MAKES THEM SO INTERESTING IS THAT THESE DELFT BLUE MINIATURE HOUSES ARE REAL COPIES OF THE GABLE HOUSES ALONGSIDE THE CANALS IN AMSTERDAM AND FROM TIME TO TIME ALSO FROM OTHER HISTORICAL TOWNS IN HOLLAND.
THIS NO 01 WAS ISSUED IN 1952 AND IS A REPRESENTION OF AND OLD UNIDENTIFIED CANAL STREET HOME IN AMSTERDAM. SOME SUGGEST IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN TAKEN FROM OLD BUILDING PLANS FOR CANAL HOUSES IN AMSTERDAM.
KLM started issuing these miniature bottles in 1952. Air companies were not allowed to give presents to their customers because of unfair competition. So, KLM had some Blue Delft houses made, and filled them with genever and KLM said "May we decide how we serve our drinks? That is how it all started.
THERE IS NOWADAYS BOLS DUTCH GENEVER (DUTCH GIN), 35% ALCOHOL, IN THE HOUSES, WHICH ARE IN FACT BOTTLES WITH A CORK AND SEAL ON TOP. Bols is the world's oldest distilled spirit brand, based in Amsterdam since 1575. In 1575, the Bols family started distilling liqueurs in Amsterdam. In 1957 KLM started to give passengers their Delft Blue Houses containing Bols Liqueur. This practise continues to this day with a new house design released each year. SINCE 1986 THESE DELFT KLM HOUSES HAVE BEEN FILLED WITH BOLS GENEVER RATHER THAN LIQUEUR.
THE KLM WAS FOUNDED 7TH OF OCTOBER IN 1919. UP TO 1993 THERE WERE 60 DIFFERENT HOUSES ISSUED. UNTIL 1994 THE HOUSES WERE ISSUED IRREGULARLY WITH NO 1-5 ISSUED IN 1952 AND NO 11-15 ISSUED IN 1960. SINCE 1994, A NEW HOUSE HAS BEEN PRESENTED EACH YEAR ON OCTOBER 7, THE ANNIVERSARY OF KLM'S FOUNDING IN 1919. In 1994, when the KLM celebrated it's 75 anniversary, they issued a total of 15 miniatures, bringing the total to 75! so that the number of houses would be the same as the age of the KLM. Then every year on the 7th of October a new house is issued. This year 2023 in October the newest house will be 104 because of 104th birthday from KLM.
CURRENTLY EACH YEAR, ABOUT 850,000 DELFT BLUE MINIATURES ARE ISSUED, FILLED WITH GENEVER. OF THESE 150,000 HOUSES REMAIN EMPTY FOR TRAVELERS TO SOME DESTINATIONS IN THE MIDDEL EAST WHERE ALCOHOL IS PROHIBITED. THEY HAVE BEEN PRESENTED OVER A LONG PERIOD AND THUS HAVE BECOME COLLECTOR ITEMS. THERE ARE CURRENTLY 104 DIFFERENT TYPES WHICH ARE NUMBERED 1 - 104.
The Delft Blue KLM houses were made by Koninklijke Goedewaagen. Goedewaagen was first located in Gouda, but moved to Nieuw Buinen (Drente) in 1984. Goedewaagen has made these KLM houses up to 1995. Their last shipment to Bols was in march 1995. Then, Bols no longer had these houses made by Goedewaagen, but had them made in Singapore. Royal Goedewaagen (1610-present) is not only one of the oldest pottery factories in Europe, they are also the only one in the Netherlands that still carries out all steps of the production process in their own factory.
MARKINGS: ROYAL DELFT BLUE HOLLAND REMNANTS OF A RYNBENDE SCHIEDAM STICKER ON BACK WITH KLM IN BLUE UNDERNEATH Simon Rijnbende who, in 1793, at the age of 16 years, started a distillery at Schiedam. In the 70's Rynbende was taken over by Henkes. Henkes was taken over by Bols in the 80's. The most logical explanation is, that KLM's contract first was with Rynbende, who already issued these houses filled with gin before the contract with KLM. After Rynbende was taken over by Henkes, the KLM miniatures were filled with Henkes liquor. Then, in the 80's the Bols houses came.
