NeverDead (PS3) Review

Gameplay & Mechanics

NeverDead introduces a highly original gameplay concept: the protagonist, Bryce Boltzmann, is immortal and cannot be killed. Instead of dying, Bryce loses limbs, which can then be reattached or used creatively to solve puzzles and defeat enemies. This mechanic sets NeverDead apart from traditional action games and encourages experimentation during combat and exploration.

Combat blends third-person shooting with melee attacks, allowing players to dismember enemies while managing Bryces own detachable body parts. While the idea is inventive, the execution can feel clunky. Controls lack precision, camera angles can be awkward, and combat encounters often feel repetitive rather than strategic.

Pros

  • Unique immortality and limb-loss mechanic

  • Creative puzzle and combat ideas

  • Encourages experimentation

Cons

  • Clunky controls and camera issues

  • Repetitive combat encounters

  • Inconsistent difficulty and pacing

Story & Setting

NeverDead leans heavily into style and personality, featuring a modern supernatural setting filled with demons, secret organizations, and dark humor. Bryces sarcastic attitude and banter-driven dialogue give the game a distinctive tone, though the story itself is often confusing and poorly explained.

While the lore hints at an interesting world, weak storytelling and uneven pacing make it difficult to stay fully invested. Characters lack development, and plot points are often introduced without meaningful payoff.

Graphics & Presentation

Visually, NeverDead shows flashes of creativity but is inconsistent overall. Character designs are stylish, and some environments convey a strong sense of atmosphere. However, textures are often bland, animations can appear stiff, and visual glitches occasionally break immersion.

The games presentation feels unpolished, as if strong ideas were not fully realized due to technical limitations or rushed development.

Sound & Music

The soundtrack is energetic and helps drive the action, while sound effects during combat are suitably impactful. Voice acting is mixed Bryces performance fits the characters tone, but supporting cast performances vary in quality.

Audio design supports the games style but does little to elevate its weaker narrative moments.

Final Verdict

NeverDead on PS3 is an ambitious and imaginative action game that struggles with execution. Its immortality mechanic is genuinely clever and occasionally fun, but clunky controls, repetitive combat, and uneven storytelling prevent it from reaching its full potential.

For players willing to overlook its flaws, NeverDead offers a unique and memorable experience. However, its best approached with tempered expectations.

Recommendation: Worth trying for its originality alone, but best suited for players who enjoy experimental gameplay concepts and can tolerate rough edges in execution.
