Edited by Zwelakhe Sisulu, a prominent anti-apartheid journalist and activist, this volume served as a "people's history" of South Africa. It was part of a movement to retell South African history from the perspective of the oppressed majority, challenging the Eurocentric narratives of the apartheid era.
The book emerged from the New Nation newspaper, which was founded in 1986 by the Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference. Sisulu, the founding editor, was frequently detained without trial during this period for his journalism.
