The New Republic (Nieuwe Republiek):

• • This was a short-lived Boer republic established in what is now part of South Africa.
  • It originated from land granted to Boer mercenaries by Dinzulu, the son of the Zulu king Cetshwayo.
  • The republic existed from 1884 to 1888, when it was incorporated into the South African Republic (Transvaal).
  • An organized postal service was active from December of 1884, and stamps began to be issued from January 7th of 1886.
  • These stamps represent a brief period of postal independence for the New Republic.
  • Due to the short life of the New Republic these stamps are highly sought after by collectors.
