Flowering Tobacco [ Nicotiana Alata ] is native from southern Brazil to northeastern Argentina, this species of flowering tobacco (often called winged tobacco) is a somewhat spindly plant that typically grows 3-5’ tall. Spatulate basal leaves to 12” long are attached by distinctive winged petioles (alata means winged). The plant produces fragrant, tubular flowers and when night falls, the blooms of flowering tobacco grow more fragrant.
Flowering Tobacco [ Nicotiana Alata ] grows in any garden soil and prefer full sun to partial shade. Although a perennial, it is usually grown as an annual. The plant is great as mass in borders or rock gardens, and as site fragrant variety near a patio or deck. Hummingbirds like its tubular-shaped flowers, which give them easy access to a meal of nectar. Young plants need warmth and sunshine. Regular fertilization is recommended.
