Description:
Half-hardy annual or sometimes short-lived perennial. Somewhat course appearance with large slightly sticky, ovate to elliptic basal leaves and stems carrying clusters of trumpet-shaped flowers from midsummer to autumn. Usually white but they may be in various shades from pink to red or greenish. Strongly fragrant, particularly in the evening. There re numerous cultivrs and hybrids.

Cultivation:
Moist, well drained, fertile soil in sun or part shade. Can be susceptible to mosaic virus or aphid attack.

Propagation:
Needs light to germinate, sow just covered. Start indoors 6 weeks be fore last frost, 21-24C, set out one to two weeks after last frost. Sow outdoors after last frost, or in fall for germination next spring, though this may be less predictable. Sun to partial shade; does well in hot, dry areas.

Native to warm areas of South America There is some confusion as to whether Nicotiana affinis is a synonym, or perhaps for Nicotiana alata 'Grandiflora', or a distinct but very closely related species. pronounced: nih-ko-she-AH-na ah-LAH-tuh
