In its early years, the company focused solely on match manufacturing. By 1924, it relocated its Cape Town factory from Rosebank to Observatory, marking the beginning of its expansion. In 1954, it established a subsidiary company in Rhodesia, strengthening its presence in the region. Growth continued with the acquisition of the National Match Co Ltd in 1969, further consolidating the industry under the Lion Match name. International expansion followed in 1972 with the creation of Fosforeira de Moçambique Limitada in Matola, Mozambique. In 1980, Wilkinson Lion Sales, a division of the company, moved back to Durban, solidifying its operational base in South Africa.
