Wii Sports was the first game in the series and a launch game for the Wii console. The game was bundled with the console in all regions except Japan and South Korea.
Nintendo explained the new name in a press release, saying in part that, Wii sounds like we, which emphasizes that the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.
