Shirley Moore - Nivek

Her love for flowers and animals inspired artist Shirley Moore to produce ceramics in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Shirley's vision had a humble beginning with only six employees and a tiny, cramped studio. However, despite these deplorable economic conditions, within eighteen months, Nivek Ceramics grew to a staff of over sixty employees, including forty gifted artists from all over Zimbabwe.

Each piece is hand crafted from raw clay and then carefully hand painted.  Many of the ceramics require days to produce the painted artwork due to the attention to fine detail.   Each of the artists is free to express themselves so that every design is unique; all flora and fauna depicted on the creations are indigenous to Southern Africa.  Many works have a whimsical theme that allows for even greater creative expression by the artists.

Says Shirley, “Opening the kiln full of glazed pieces inspires me every single time.  I love to come to work and I enjoy every day.  At present, we have very hard times in Zimbabwe and we take special care of our staff and their many problems, especially those with extended families due to the AIDS epidemic.  I am proud of the special relationship I have with all of my staff.”

Nivek now exports to many countries and its ceramics adorn the homes in South Africa, Australia, France, the United States, and the United Kingdom.  African Dreams is proud to carry Nivek Ceramics.
