Nobonke, She of all People is an extraordinary telling of a life story, one woman's journey towards the essence of herself as woman, dancer, lover, mother, Afrikaans, white, South African. Against the backdrop of racial tension and sincere attempts to overcome these within the intricate fabric of South African politics and society, this is an intensely personal and poetic South African story. The narrative is based on 20 years of ardent journal writing, depicting the complex nature and the sensitive nuances of a mixed race relationship at the time just before the end of the age of apartheid, encapsulating the hopes and fears of a new future. The book is written through three voices, that of the author as an apartheid child, the pregnant mother and dancer, and her child still in utero. They are woven together in a way that delves into the winning, if not thriving outcome of complex racial relations, diverse and subjective explorations towards reconciliation, transformation and the 'best flowering of excellence, humanity, not polarising, but awakening spirit', 'defining race without losing its uniqueness' and 'practical love' (words of Nigerian writer Ben Okri at his Steve Biko Memorial Lecture, UCT on 12 September 2012).
