Northern Rhodesia - 'R.A.O.B.' Gilded Medal (Homo Rhodesiensis)
This early, good quality, heavy gilt metal 'Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffalos' (RAOB) medal, features a dangling, heavy gilded skull, with the words 'HOMO RHODESIENSIS' on the suspension bar, and 'VICTORYLODGE' on the top bar. The top of the skull is also engraved 'BRO. M. GATES'. The medal is in excellent condition, complete with ribbon, and measures 4,5cm x 10cm with ribbon, and weighs 52g.
NOTE: 'Homo Rhodesiensis' (Rhodesian Man), was the name given to a single fossil skull found in Northern Rhodesia at a mine called 'Broken Hill' (now Kabwe) in 1921. It was found without the lower jaw and dates between 125 000 and 300 000 years old.
