HEJL Denmark Van Garlicks Silverplated Tea Bag Strainer Vintage 1970s

ON AUCTION IS A BEAUTIFUL SILVERPLATED TEABAG STRAINER MADE BY HEJL IN DENMARK FEATURING AN EMBOSSED FLORAL DESIGN ON AN ORNATELY SCALLOPED SHAPED RIM AND HANDLE. IT WAS SOLD IN ONE OF VAN GARLICKS DEPARTMENT STORES WHO WAS A WELL KNOWN DEPARTMENT STORE IN SOUTH AFRICA THAT CLOSED DOWN IN 1993.
 
HEJL Denmark silverplated items are high-quality, vintage Scandinavian pieces, often dating from the 1950s to the 1980s. Known for Mid-Century Modern and often Art Deco-influenced styles, the brand frequently produced silver-plated brass items like candle holders, baby cups, napkin rings, and trays, sometimes featuring ornate floral or character designs. 
 
HEJL items are highly regarded for their durability and typical Danish craftsmanship, serving as both functional tableware and decorative accents.

There is evidence of tea strainers dating back to ancient China, the earliest models likely being made of bamboo. However their main purpose was to keep bugs out of drinking water. It was demand from British consumers that really brought tea strainers into the fold. The Victorian Era saw the debut of strainer baskets that you could place over your cup while filling it from a teapot, a method still widely used today. The 1800s brought tea strainers made from more luxurious materials and targeted to the upper classes. Companies such as Tiffany & Co. began to make tea strainers out of sterling silver.

VAN GARLICKS (1875-1903):
In the bustling streets of Cape Town in 1875, John Garlick laid the foundation for what would become an iconic retail empire Garlicks, a department store chain that would leave an indelible mark on South African retail history.
On May 3, 1875, John Garlick opened his inaugural store on the corner of Bree and Strand Streets in the heart of Cape Town's central business district. As the 1880s unfolded, Garlick seized the opportunity for expansion, establishing branches in key locations across the Transvaal. From the vibrant streets of Johannesburg and Pretoria to the diamond-rich grounds of Kimberley in the northern Cape Province, Garlicks became a name synonymous with quality and variety.
The company further made its mark in Johannesburg with a branch in the Carlton Centre, Africa's tallest building when it opened in the early 1970s.
As the 20th century progressed, Garlicks faced the ebb and flow of retail dynamics. The last chapter of this retail saga unfolded in late February 1993 when the doors of the final Garlicks department store closed in Cape Town.
