Description: Portrait is Pastor John Chilembwe, A local Baptist pastor who was a strong opponent to the colonial government and protested the forced labour schemes and the conscription of men into the colonial army. He led a rebellion on 23 January 1915 against British rule. The revolt ended with the killing of Chilembwe. His martyrdom made him a revered hero in Malawi and 15 January is a public holiday in honour of him as is his portrait on their currency.
