William Bennington Boyce was the trusted adviser to Sir Benjamin d'Urban during the Sixth Kaffir War of 1834-5. However, the part played by the Wesleyan missionaries during that war brought them into disfavour in England, and Boyce himself was strongly criticised.
This led him to set out his opinions unequivocally in his "Notes on South African Affairs".
