Additional Information
This is the first account, authoritative and factual, of a war within a war the extraordinary story of the Ossewabrandwag in South Africa between 1938 and 1948, and more particularly during the Second World War.
Here we have a vivid personal description of how the Security Police of which Lieutenant Colonel Visser was an active member combated the O.B. on the home front. The author gives details of the sabotage, armed robbery and even murder committed by the para-military underground movement to attain their ends the establishment of a National Socialist government in South Africa while professing that the O.B.s only aim was to promote the Afrikaner nations identity.
Led by Dr Hans van Rensburg, the O.B. was not only pro-Nazi and anti-British but was also anti-Dr Malan and his purified Nationalist Party. A remarkable character on whom much new light is thrown including details of his training in Germany is Robey Liebbrandt, former South African Olympic Games Boxer, who was landed secretly on the South West African coast with plans to carry out sabotage and assassinate Smuts.
The full facts of Operation Weissdorn, culled from secret German documents, are given, as are fascinating details of the espionage activities of Hamlet, Felix and other agents who were sheltered and assisted by the O.B. Colonel Visser publishes, for the first time, a detailed secret account of a five-hour interview which Van Rensburg gave to two American aides to the American Ambassador to South Africa, General Holcomb. Van Rensburg admitted to these two Americans that he unreservedly condoned the murders of two men, Louis Nel and Dice Lotter, because he said they were police informers
