Heritage
A tiny distillery right in the centre of Oban a seaside town also known as the gateway to the Western Isles of the Hebrides. In 1890 a cave was discovered behind the Oban distillery containing Mesolithic human remains. The distillery itself is ancient in whisky terms, predating the relaxed licencing laws of 1824 by a good 30 years. Establishing in 1794 by Hugh Stevenson, the town grew up around the distillery, hemming it in. Today, with a mountain behind and a busy boardwalk in front, there is no chance that production of this delicious malt will be increased. Sadly for South Africans, Oban is a firm favourite malt in the US and much of it goes west across the Atlantic, rather than south. One last thing it's Oh-bin not Oh Ban. Get it right.
How this whisky is best enjoyed? With a wee drop of water after dinner.
