Ocean Max Fine Kalahari Gravel 12mm is a natural aquarium substrate made to look like a soft desert/riverbed mix, using crushed stone from Kalahari-style mineral rock.

What it is

This substrate is:

  • Fine gravel (about 12 mm grain size)
  • Natural light brown / beige Kalahari tone
  • Made from crushed mineral rock (not dyed plastic)
  • Designed for freshwater aquariums and aquascaping

It's part of Ocean Max's "natural riverbed" gravel range.

Key benefits

  • Natural look gives a soft desert or riverbed appearance
  • Fish safe smooth enough for bottom dwellers like corydoras and loaches
  • Good for plants roots can anchor easily in fine gravel
  • Better water flow than sand reduces compaction
  • Easy maintenance can be vacuumed during water changes

Things to watch out for

  • Can trap waste between grains needs regular siphoning
  • May slightly raise pH depending on mineral content (usually mild)
  • Not as soft as sand for very delicate bottom fish
  • Needs rinsing before use to remove dust

Where it works best

  • Community freshwater aquariums
  • Natural aquascapes (river/desert themes)
  • African-themed tanks
  • Planted tanks with hardy root plants

Simple comparison in Ocean Max range

  • Sand (0.11mm): softest, best for corydoras
  • Fine Kalahari gravel (12mm): balanced, natural look + easy cleaning
  • 6mm gravel: more open flow, more debris trapping, less plant detail

Bottom line

This is one of the most "natural-looking" Ocean Max substrates if you want a warm, earthy tank that's easier to maintain than sand but still fine enough for planted setups and bottom fish.
