Ocean Max Fine Tangaria Gravel 12mm is a natural freshwater aquarium substrate made from small crushed rock, designed to look like a riverbed while staying safe for fish and plants.

What it is

Fine Tangaria (often linked to Tanganyika-style gravel) is:

  • Natural crushed stone gravel (not dyed plastic)
  • Grain size about 12 mm
  • Light brown / beige / sandy natural colour
  • Made to resemble lake substrates like Lake Tanganyika environments

Main benefits

  • Fish-safe & smooth safe for bottom fish like corydoras and cichlids
  • Natural look gives a realistic river/lake bed appearance
  • Good plant support roots can anchor easily
  • Good water flow doesn't compact as badly as very fine sand
  • Easy maintenance can be vacuumed during water changes

Things to know

  • Can trap dirt between grains (needs regular siphoning)
  • May slightly affect pH depending on stone type (usually minimal)
  • Not as soft as fine sand for very sensitive bottom feeders
  • Should always be rinsed well before use

Where it's used

  • Community freshwater tanks
  • African cichlid tanks (Tanganyika-style setups)
  • Planted aquariums (light to moderate planting)
  • Natural aquascapes with rocks and driftwood

Simple comparison idea

  • Fine sand (0.11mm): softer, best for corydoras
  • Tangaria gravel (12mm): balanced, easier cleaning, more texture
  • Coarse gravel (36mm+): more flow, less plant-friendly
