During a storm in May 1954, within a few meters of the Sea Point promenade wall, the “Basuto Coast” (246 tonnes) ran ashore. Whilst trying to rescue the crew from the sinking ship, tragically the artist Douglas Currie lost his life. This charming painting of cottages in a rural setting in the “Boland,” comes in its original wooden frame. To the back of the picture, the original sticker of the art dealer in Dorset, England, who supplied the “Board for Artist” is still present, as is some scribbling in pencil and a price tag of twenty shillings - not an insignificant amount in those pre-decimal days. The picture is in pristine condition, measuring 46cm x 35cm with frame; the image: 34cm x 24cm. Please add R48 for postage.
