Jeremy Mallinson,  Zoological Director of the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust in the Channel Islands, here recounts his adventures on his first expedition to Southern Africa, when he was "green as a baby asparagus" about animal collecting. The expedition took Mallinson through East Aftrica and Zambia and into the mountain regions of Rhodesia. The major part of his story describes the treasure chest of wildlife he found in the little-known Okavango region of Botswana, in habitats ranging from the desert-like shores of Lake N'Gami to the more lush terrain of the Northern swamps. Enumerating his mistakes as well as his triumphs, Mallinson tells how he was out-smarted by flamingoes on occasion, but soon thereafter successfully caged two "stern-looking" crocodiles. His friendship with a three-year-old lioness, Chinky, portrays the deep bond that can develop between man and animal. Camplife in the swamps, with conservationists Robert and June Kay, their two pet lions, twenty brown hens, and three coker spaniels, is an experience difficult to surpass.
