A strange hoard of old documents, pamphlets, leaflets etc.
1) The first lot is handwritten papers with heading “Letters written after leaving England for the Cape in July 5 1828” and the other “Letters received after leaving England in July 5 1829” The first lot is written in columns entitled “To whom” “Address” “Written from” “By what Ship” and “When she sailed” and the other “From Whom” “Where from” “Last date” “By what Ship” and “When received”. There are about 10 pages with writing on both sides.
2) The second lot are pages from a Diary what seem to be a entitled “Index for the Year 1829” with an index for each event for example “Visit to Robben Island Page 5” “Trip to Simons Bay Page 48”, “Visit to Stellenbosch page 93” etc. Only about 10 pages still survives including a poem “The River”
3) Then there are few items from the 1890s (part of legal documents?)
4) Then pamphlets and leaflets from mostly commemorative services held at Knysna for the dead of the First World War (e.g. “Hymns to be Sung at the Unveiling of the Memorial at Dellville Wood”
5) Second World War pamphlets & leaflets for example “Souvenir Programme of Review of the Cape Town Highlanders (D.C. & S.O.) 55th Birthday. Command Training Depot, Oudtshoorn April 25, 1940"
There are approx. 30 items excluding the early 1828 and 1829 papers. Condition varies.
There are also more recent items like postcards en First Day Covers (not shown in the pictures) that the winning bidder can have if he wants them.
