A cup and saucer with the coat of arms of the old South Africa. This set was likely used on the former South African Railways – it is in plain white vitreous china with bands of green and gilding on the edge of the saucer and the top of the cup, with the coat of arms prominently below in green. It was manufactured by the English firm of John Maddock and Sons and the back stamp dates it to after 1945. This duo probably comes from the 1950s.
The cup measures about 7.8 cm across (excluding the handle) and stands 7.6 cm high. The saucer is 14 cm across and 2.2 cm high.
These pieces are likely more than 60 years old and have been used many hundreds or thousands of times. As such they show much wear and tear from repeated usage. There are no cracks or grazing, but there two tiny nicks on the rim of the cup and another tiny one on its foot. The gilding is almost completely lost on the saucer and somewhat on the cup. There are many fine scratches (including a longish one on the saucer which may look like a hairline crack), rubbings and light stains all over the pieces. They are sold as is.
These were utility items and are thus rarely, if ever, found. A real treat for the railway enthusiast or those nostalgic for mid-20th century South Africa!
