Old St George's is still remembered as one of the oldest and largest churches in South Africa, and many thought it the most handsome in the country. Within its walls many famous local men worshipped, historic events took place, and its story is part of the nation's history.
After many trials and difficulties in the raising of monies for building and the selection of suitable designs during the period 1825-29, the foundation stone was laid on 23 April 1830. The church was opened in 1834, bells were provided in 1835, and the building was finally completed in 1836.
The story of the financing, planning and development of Old St George's is told in loving detail, with ample references to contemporary sources, and with a rich fund of anecdote: controversies over the initial designs, the provision of pews, the memorials, organs and organists, the choirs, schools and missions.
The text is supported by illustrations and photographs from contemporary sources, of buildings and objects and personalities - including pictures by Poortermans, Baines, Langschmidt, Bowler and Duff.
