Olea europaea 'Arbequina' | Compact, early-bearing olive with exceptional oil quality

The Arbequina olive is one of the most popular and widely grown olive cultivars worldwide — and for good reason. Originating from Catalonia, Spain, it's prized for its compact size, early and consistent fruiting, and highly aromatic, mild-flavoured oil. This adaptable variety thrives in South African conditions and is perfect for both home gardens and small-scale orchards.

Plant Care

Sun: Full sun — essential for healthy growth and optimal fruit and oil development.
Soil: Well-drained, sandy to loamy soil; enrich with compost or organic matter if soil is poor.
Water: Moderate — water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry slightly between watering; drought tolerant once established.
Fertilizer: Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser; supplement lightly with potassium and trace elements to support flowering and fruit set.
Pruning: Light pruning in late winter to shape and open the canopy; remove weak or crossing branches.
Top tip: Avoid overwatering — olives prefer "Mediterranean lean" conditions. A layer of mulch helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.
