A few years ago I read Dr. Carl Niehaus autobiography, Fighting for hope, and my life was forever changed. This week I read it once more and I was again challenged in the very fiber of my being. In the 80s Carl Niehaus became well known in South Africa because he, as an Afrikaner, became involved in the then banned ANC and armed struggle against apartheid, and also in the much publicized build up to his treason trail and jail sentence. When he was finally released in 1991 was made a member of the ANCs Negotiation Commission, spokesperson for President Nelson Mandela, and eventually South Africas ambassador to the Netherlands. Niehaus writes about his upbringing in a typical Afrikaner family of the time. But eventually he witnesses the results of apartheid and how the lives of millions of people are affected by it. This plunges him into a prolonged wrestling with his own conscience and upbringing, and in time he realizes that there is only one road: apartheid must be stopped. His involvement with the ANC ostracizes him from his family, many of his friends and from the Afrikaner establishment as a whole. Om te veg vir hoop - Carl Niehaus. Human & Rousseau 1993.
