In response to queries by friends interested in the welfare of South Africa, a country with which the author was well acquainted in his capacity as special commissioner responsible for surveying the boundary between Griqualand West and the Orange Free State in 1876, he here compiled twenty-one chapters under four headings, gleaned from his journals and from letters to family. The northern Cape town of Warrenton is named after him.

Hardcover published by Isbister and Co. Limited, 1902. Original blue cloth, worn at extremities, with gilt titling. Two folding maps and all illustrations present. Bookplate of South African artist W.H. Coetzer on the inside front board, bearing his signature. 404 gilt-topped pages including index, the other edges being rough-cut, with scattered foxing in places.
