The New Mexico State University's Chile Pepper Institute identified the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion as the newest hottest pepper in the world as of 16 February 2012. According to the New Mexico State University Chili Institute, the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion ranks at 2,009,231 SHU on the Scoville scale, making it the hottest pepper in the world to date. The golf ball-sized pepper scored the highest among a handful of chilli breeds reputed to be among the hottest in the world. Its average heat topped more than 1.2 million units on the Scoville heat scale, while fruits from some individual plants reached 2 million heat units. The Moruga Scorpion was recently surpassed by the HPB22 / Carolina Reaper Pepper as the worlds hottest.
