One Ounce (1 OZ) GOLD Medallion: State of Israel 40 Years (1948-1988) Very Rare
The 22ct gold medal comes with a second medal (struck in bronze) that was awarded in 1971 to Mr. & Mrs. L. Shill of South Africa by Dr. Israel Goldstein, the then Chairman of Keren Hayesod United Israel Appeal. Louis Shill was the South African Minister of Housing and Public Works in the previous century in the cabinet of F.W. de Klerk. He collected gold medals as we have a receipt for an 18 carat gold Jan van Riebeeck medallion that he bought via Standard Bank from the Africana Commemorative Mint on 7 December 1977. The gold Mafeking Siege Medallions we currently have on auction, also belonged to him.
This Israel gold medal (or coin?) is a mystery, as it is unrecorded as far as our research could turn up. It is stamped as number 2 of probably a very low number produced. A Jewish friend of mine and fellow numismatist, are of the opinion that the Jewish National Fund may have been involved with its production. The medal is either a pattern or was struck for presentation purposes to a handful of foreign dignitaries.
