Onkyo (High-end Japanese Audio brand)
Onkyo translates to "Sound Harmony"
Working Condition: 10/10. Sounds amazing. Drivers are 100%.
Physical Condition: 6/10. Has defects. Speaker boxes have sustained a few knocks, bumps and nicks, though mostly on REAR corners. Speaker grilles are good condition overall, but do show slight tearing at the join. Attached images expose these defects.
The SKR-4800s
These have been designed specifically to reproduce spatial sounds in a multichannel surround setup, but then, nobody told these speakers that. Have been using these as regular stereo bookshelfs with surprisingly good results.
Yes, it's true a tweeterless design is not ideal for effective high-frequency handling, and furthermore, those crossovers are hardwired for a narrow, limited frequency range sufficient for rear surround channels. But my own experience of these is somewhat different. Whether this be fluke or intent, these speakers, for their size and value, and in doing regular front stereo, reproduce a sound-signature more in-line with British high-end audio in that those now "missing" frequencies result in a warm airy-ness, unrivalled vocal clarity and an almost impossible amount of detail.
Don't get me wrong. You won't be replacing your Bowers with these anytime soon. And if you have Bowers already, this is definitely not for you. No. This is for that guy on a very tight, limited budget, looking to experience quality sound at an extremely affordable price.
My only niggle with these lies not with their sound but in Onkyo's rather poor build quality and design choices.
Far as I'm concerned, if you're gonna tempt me with removable grilles, then, at very least, make it so your goddamn speaker looks good without them for godsake!
And also, why "waste" such capable drivers if only to be diminished by less-than-sufficient cabinets, constructed poorly, and with bargain-basement materials.
These needed a deeper box, something better than chipboard, and their performance, though good, would be that much better. Still. At this price point, truth is, even in these shabby little third-grade cabinets, and will say it again,
at this price ,
far as "performance" ...
NOTHING ELSE comes close.
