The 1/2c, 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c and R1 coins were struck as part of the second decimal issue between 1965 and 1989. In 1965, the two-and-a-half cent coin was replaced with the two cent coin. Between 1965 and 1969, coins had either the Afrikaans wording Suid-Afrika or the English wording South Africa. In 1970, the image of Jan van Riebeeck was replaced with the coat of arms on the obverse. Also in 1970 the ½ cent coin was added to the series but was soon after dropped from the series again in 1983.
Due to the short life span of the R1 notes in circulation (1973-1975) these were replaced by a nickel R1 from 1977. HOWEVER DUE TO REQUESTS FROM COLLECTORS AND NUMISMATIC SOCIETIES A SILVERR R1 COIN OF 80% SILVER WAS MINTED FOR PROOF SETS FROM 1965 TO 1990. The R1 silver coins was also in circulation with large mintages between 1965 to 1969 and then in smaller (around 30000) mintages between 1970 and 1976. Between 1977 and 1990 the R1 silver coins only came in proof sets like these with even lower mintages 1977 (19000); 1978 (17000); 1979 (15000); 1980 (15000); 1981 (12000);1982 (10000); 1983 (14000); 1984 (11000); 1985 (35000); 1986 (34000); 1987(17000); 1988 (7000); 1989 (18000) and 1990 (1000).
THESE SILVER COINS CAN BE DIFFERENTIATED FROM THE NICKEL R 1 BY THEIR LARGER SIZE (32,7MM DIAMETER) AND WEIGHT (15G). THE NICKEL R1 COINS WERE 31MM IN DIAMETER AND 12G IN WEIGHT.

PROOF SETS: A Proof Set is a complete set of proof uncirculated coins of each denomination of planned circulation coins of a country made each year.
A proof coin is a rare, uncirculated coin that a mint has specially created each year. A proof coin has never entered public circulation, nor has it served as currency in the market. Proof coins are rarer than regularuncirculated coins and are collectible items.
PROOF COINS ARE SAMPLES OF NEW EDITION COINS AND THAT MANY COUNTRIES CREATE AND IN NEARLY ALL CURRENCIES. TRADITIONALLY, MINTS PRODUCE THESE COINS BEFORE MASS-PRODUCING A NEW COIN TO MAKE SURE THAT IT HAS CORRECTLY MINTED ALL PARTS OF THE COIN. MINTS ARCHIVE THEM FOR RECORD-KEEPINGBUT ALSO CREATE PROOF COINS SPECIFICALLY FOR COLLECTORS. Proof coins are usually shinier and more detailed thanregular coins. The name proof actually refers to the finish on the coin. Before the coins have the details printed on them, the blank coins are handpolished and handled with care to ensure the best strike or printing.
